Watson, U-M professor and the second director of the Detroit Observatory, had been on a quest to discover a new planet and cement his legacy. ⁠
⁠
In the summer of 1878, he headed west to observe a solar eclipse, confident he would find a new planet. The story of his quest—preserved in his papers at the Bentley—reveals the challenges of science in the late-1800s and the fine line separating fascination and folly.⁠

Jonas Salk and U-M Professor Thomas Francis announcing on April 12, 1955 that the polio vaccine was "80-90% effective in preventing paralytic polio." ⁠
⁠
A few weeks after their announcement at that U-M sound stage, Ann Arbor school children began to receive their inoculations.⁠
⁠
A few years after, polio was all but eradicated.⁠

Father Gabriel Richard created the motto for Detroit after the city was destroyed in a massive fire in 1805. Richard and his friend Augustus Woodward helped rebuild the city. ⁠

In 1817, the pair moved on to their next project: a school that would become the University of Michigan.⁠

Football, soccer, and rugby all had a common ancestor in a game played in the 1800s. The platypus on this evolutionary tree is the game of pushball, a 100-a-side melee that technically had the objective of putting a giant inflated ball into a net but was at it's core a way for U-M graduating classes to brawl with each other.⁠

The Diag Leaf Blizzard🍁🌳🍂: a climatological consequence of the "arbor" in Ann Arbor.

The Little Brown Jug is probably the oldest (but certainly the best) college football rivalry trophy. Each year, the winner of the U-M vs. Minnesota game gets to take it home. ⁠
⁠
The man holding the trophy here is Henry Hatch, long-time U-M equipment manager. His collection at the Bentley contains quite a few photos of him with the Jug.⁠
⁠
The score Hatch is pointing to is the 1943 49–6 rout that broke a 9-year Gopher victory streak. ⁠
⁠
That year, because of WWII, eligibility rules were relaxed to the point where schools could take players from nearby military training programs. Bill Daley, who had led Minnesota to three victories over U-M before enlisting in the Navy, scored two touchdowns FOR the Wolverines during the 1943 game!⁠

The attire at the 1948 "Masquerade of the Heads" displayed all the creativity from the U-M School of Music and College of Architecture and Design, along with the Modern Dance Club, Ballet Club and Gilbert and Sullivan Society. ⁠

We particularly enjoy the caterpillar/butterfly couples costume on the left.⁠
⁠
According to the Michigan Daily, Masquerade attendees were expected to be in semi-formal attire along with masques that "represent everything from eccentric people to household appliances." ⁠
