Milliken, and, most recently, former United States Senator Carl Levin, we ask: what can the lives of remarkable public service and long-term political success and recognition teach us? Scholars will no doubt argue over this in coming years, and they will do so, in part, by visiting the Bentley archives.

    Challenging the Interpretations of the Past

    With all appropriate pomp and circumstance, on June 30, 1913, a statue of Michigan politician Zachariah Chandler was unveiled in the National Statuary Hall of the United States Capitol. In 2011, that statute was removed from Statuary Hall. And therein lies a tale worth retelling at a time when efforts to challenge names on buildings and statues in parks are underway all over the country, including in Michigan.
