In honor of U-M’s Ice Hockey Team advancing to the Frozen Four, here’s some hockey history!

Did you know that the frozen Huron River was a popular hockey rink for early students at U-M? This is the 1911 U-M Huron Hockey Club, to prove it!

It’s Robert Frost’s birthday! ❄ Did you know that Frost was U-M’s first Poet-in-Residence in 1921?

He helped mentor student poets, and a local store even named an ice cream after him! (The “Frost-Bite:” a "brick" of ice cream covered in chocolate, in case you’re wondering.)

He returned to Ann Arbor several times after that: first as a "Fellow in Letters" in the mid-1920s, then to read his poetry.

Here, you can see photos taken of him at U-M during his final visit in 1962, in a conversation with poet Donald Hall!

As a groundbreaking landscape architect, professor emeritus, and former Dean of the School for Environment and Sustainability (um_seas), he quite literally helped shape the University of Michigan.

Meet Evalicia Chavez!

Chavez is a junior studying anthropology, art history, and museum studies at U-M.

“I applied for a job as a docent at the Detroit Observatory on a whim. Very quickly, it became a major component of my day-to-day life,” she writes.

As a student docent at the historic Detroit Observatory, she has done all kinds of work to help people connect with the past!

Here, you can see Dr. Hazel Losh, an early women astronomer, looking through a University of Michigan telescope around 1927!

Dr. Losh was affectionately known by the U-M community as "Doc Losh." In the late 1800s and early 1900s, women like "Doc Losh" fought to study the stars just like their male colleagues.

In 1931, Dr. E.K. Janaki Ammal was the first Indian woman to get a botany PhD in the entire United States!

Here, you can see her as a recipient of the U-M Barbour Scholarship, around 1924.

Did you know that the Trotter Multicultural Center began as the William Monroe Trotter House, a center for Black students on campus?

Created because of the student-led Black Action Movement, it was named after civil rights activist William Trotter!

Pictured here, on Washtenaw Avenue, is actually the second of 2 previous Trotter Houses, opened in 1972. The first Trotter House was an old Victorian building on the corner of South and East University Street, in 1971!

After Rosa Parks became a crucial figure in the Civil Rights Movement, she moved to Detroit in 1957!

She would live there for the majority of the rest of her life, championing civil rights causes.

At the end of her 1992 autobiography, 'Rosa Parks: My Story,' she wrote:

“Everyone living together in peace and harmony and love… that’s the goal we seek, and I think that the more people there are who reach that state of mind, the better we will all be.”

U-M's Collegiate Sorosis society was founded in 1886, and the 140th anniversary of that founding will be in 2026! 😲 These researchers are preparing for that anniversary, and they're so ahead of schedule! We're impressed.
